That's true that a word "ranger" isn't properly used, because ranger indicates a soldier who is trained in close-fight combat and has riding skills.
But if we go into that theme, I'd say that a word "assassin" isn't proper for DM's figure, because the word means "a person who commits murder", and basically that's every class in DM. A rogue would be a proper class name, but that we would have to throw away the trigered gas bomb, wouldn't we ? And yes, I agree with Bambam on this matter, it doesn't really matter what words are used here, the first thing is that reader knows what the writer wants to say ... as for the second, his skills are important, as much as his attitude toward playing.
